At Premier Arts Academy, we believe in providing a safe and supportive learning environment for all of our students. In accordance with IAC 513 1-2-11, the students of PAA will be treated with dignity and respect through opportunities to learn and practice proactive positive behavior. This will occur in daily morning meetings where decision-making and social skills will be discussed and throughout the day where procedures will be practiced and reinforced.

Every effort will be made to avoid restraint. There are no seclusion spaces on school grounds so students who need time away from other students will spend time with an adult in another learning or public space. Staff will be trained on behavior management techniques and de-escalation strategies. Physical restraint will only be employed by trained staff when the student’s violent or disruptive behavior causes or is reasonably likely to cause imminent risk of serious injury to the student, other students, and adults; and when law enforcement is not directly involved. Physical restraint of a student, including physical restraint by a school employee, may only be used for a short period of time and shall be discontinued as soon as the imminent risk of injury to self or others has dissipated. A school employee who was not involved with the restraint shall examine the student to ascertain if any injury has been sustained during the restraint of the student. This person will document the examination on the physical restraint form. The Head of School will ensure that the parents of children who have been restrained are informed of the incident. Mechanical or chemical restraints are otherwise prohibited.

Seclusion or restraint shall never be used as a punishment, or to force compliance with staff commands. A verbal threat or verbally aggressive behavior does not, in itself, indicate an imminent risk of injury and shall not result in seclusion or restraint. Destruction or damage to property does not constitute a risk of imminent injury unless in so doing a risk of injury to the student or others is created. Staff will be trained on restrictions and approaches related to this procedure.
